2014 – Summit, Rochdale Canal
A relatively easy day for Graham and I as G&B had friends to visit
and they operated the locks under Beryl’s instruction, forgetting to shut the
gates at the first lock was the only failure!
The visitors arrived at 10:00so we had time to go to the local Co-op for
papers and stores. Littleborough is
preparing for the ‘Tour de France’ or as Graham calls it ‘Tour de Yorks’ and
they have closed car-parks and put out shirt-shaped bunting rather than little
triangles. There also was a Brass Band
playing outside the local station.
We started at 10:30, the distance was only a mile and a half but with
ten locks to do we arrived at summit lock at 16:30. (Admittedly we had stopped in one of the
locks for a small libation). Also three
of the locks were single boat width due to subsidence which had not been planned
for and the pounds were very low. We
have decided not to proceed until tomorrow as the Lock-keepers were ready to
close up (the summit locks are ‘locked’ at night to prevent vandals draining it
and closing both sides for a day while it refills) and they open at eight, the
local road is to be shut so they may be here before then.
We went off to the Summit Inn for a meal, not really up to standard and
although they advertise food on Friday – Sunday the limited choices were
running out and we were the first ordering food!
Afterwards it was enjoying the evening sun on Priscilla ii.
