2014 – Manchester (Telford Basin), Ashton Canal
Started at 07:10 to go through the nine locks on the stretch of the
Bridgewater canal that runs almost secretly through the heart of Manchester. From the canal you see the backs of buildings
until the approach to Piccadilly Lock which is underground and a haunt for sex
workers – it stinks of urine and Jeyes Fluid and the place is littered with
used condoms, beer cans, wine bottles and drug paraphernalia. If you’re travelling with kids get them to
follow the route above ground it will be nicer.
We got into Telford Basin by 11:00 then had a lazy afternoon.
